TORONTO, Ont. – An Ontario teen became the youngest person ever to swim across Lake Ontario on Sunday night.
Annaleise Carr, who’s from Walsh, a hamlet in Norfolk County, set off from Niagara-on-the- Lake at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, and ended her swim in Marilyn Bell Park, Sunday afternoon.
In 1954, long distance swimmer Bell became the first person to cross Lake Ontario.
Carr was assisted by boat escorts that, according to regulations, she was not allowed to touch. Instead, she was fed by tether. On Saturday night, she battled foot swelling and errant ships sailing too close to her boat escorts.
According to the teen’s website, she chose Lake Ontario for her swim because of its challenge.
But the swim wasn’t solely a personal challenge. Carr was raising funds for Camp Trillium, a camp for children with cancer.
By Sunday, a $10,000 donation had pushed Carr far past her $30,000 fundraising goal.
“I’ve been blessed to be able to swim a long way and I want to use that gift to help the kids and their families at Camp Trillium,” she wrote on her website.
Carr has been swimming competitively since she was four years old and trained extensively to prepare for her feat.
“Distance swimming has always been my passion in swimming,” she wrote. But in the last few years, “the lake has become my playground.”
