More information is coming out about Rick Collier, the 71-year-old Calgarian who died following a mountain climbing accident in eastern B.C.
Collier was a former Mount Royal University professor, a committed environmentalist, and a social justice advocate, but above all, he loved the outdoors.
A family friend tells the Calgary Herald that Collier climbed more than 1,300 mountains, including each of the southern Rockies.
He is described as a incredibly active runner and cyclist.
The trek he made up Mount Geikie in Mount Robson Provincial Park Wednesday was a mountain he hadn’t climbed yet, and was ultimately his last.
Two other climbers were injured in falls as the rock face gave away, but Collier plunged to his death.
This is the second climbing death in B.C. this month after a 52-year-old man died in a fall on Mount Rogers in Glacier National Park last week.
