A close call for two Calgary firefighters Thursday; a captain and a senior firefighter were rushed to hospital after a roof collapsed on them while they were battling a blaze inside home on Bedford Drive in the northeast community of Beddington.
The firefighters are going to be okay, but the home they were trying to save is likely going to be a write-off.
The walls of the one-and-a-half story home are standing, the windows intact, but the roof is gone.
A few beams remain but many of the trusses are missing and fencing has gone up around the property to keep people out.
Bob lives across the street and says the scene was a chaotic one, with around 50 neighbours coming out to watch. He says it took about 30 minutes to get the fire under control and was surprised it didn’t spread to adjacent homes.
“(The fire) was almost as tall the trees between the houses when you looked so it was probably about 20-feet high up behind the houses. You could see the flames easily,” he says.
A garage across the alley did incur some heat damage.
The one person inside the home at the time managed to get out and is said to be staying with neighbours.
Investigators are still trying to determine a cause.
