Two firefighters have been treated and released from hospital after the roof of a burning home collapsed on them.

The blaze started in a garage in the 100 block of Bedford drive before spreading to the house, triggering the fire department to issue a second alarm.

Battalion Chief Larry Fisher says they were able to get the sole occupant of the home out, unfortunately two firefighters were in the house when things went wrong.

“Fire from the garage spread to the home and crews in an effort to try and search the home to make absolutely sure no one else was there.  The roof collapsed on two of our members, a captain and a senior firefighter,” said Fisher.

Heavy smoke from the fire caused earlier delays on Deerfoot Trail.
