An online petition has been launched in the hopes of putting pressure on the Redford government to give peace officers guns and tasers.

The move follows the recent death of peace officer Rod Lazenby.

The retired Mountie was allegedly killed while investigating an animal complaint on a Priddis acreage southwest of Calgary.

Trevor Kloschinsky is facing a first degree murder charge in connection with his death.

Justice Minister Jonathan Denis says the tragedy is being reviewed to see what changes, if any, can be made to make the job of peace officer safer.

At the moment, peace officers are only allowed to carry pepper spray and a baton to protect themselves.
