Despite recent storms in Calgary that brought with it high winds, there have been no serious incidents of flying debris in the downtown.

After the death of a young girl from falling debris in August 2009, the city adopted an Advanced Weather Forecasting System that monitors wind speeds and notifies construction companies when storms are approaching so they can take immediate action to lock down any loose materials on jobsites.

The city’s Cliff De Jong tells 660News, the success of the program can be attributed to a greater awareness and advanced notification of coming events.

De Jong says they responded to five minor incidents during Tuesday’s storm and wind speeds were clocked at around 104 kms/hr.

He adds, the system is always on the go for any building including active construction sites and is a requirement for all new buildings under construction five storeys or higher.
