Strong wind, hail and heavy rain from a severe thunderstorm made its way through Calgary Tuesday afternoon. Some callers to the 660News say some streets were flooded, traffic lights were out and power was knocked out to a number of homes.
The storm led to a flood of calls to the 911 dispatchers starting at about 2:30 p.m, which resulted in over 130 calls being sent to the Calgary Fire Department. During the following 90 minutes, the Fire Department responded to downed power lines, trees and power outages as well one semi trailer that ended up on its side.
At the peak of the storm, nearly every piece of fire equipment was on the road assisting Calgarians.
Fortunately there were no injuries or fires reported.
Two window washers on a downtown high rise had a huge scare when they got trapped on their scaffold 25 stories up. The Fire Department says the washers had to break a window, where the Fire Department helped them crawl through a small window to safety.
They were treated for minor injuries by EMS and did have a little bit of a scare when the storm took them by surprise.
The storm was so severe the Calgary International Airport issued a lightening advisory. Flights to and from Edmonton and Toronto were cancelled.
North of us, the wind knocked out power lines that supply the city of Airdrie with power. Crossfield, Irricana, Beiseker, Mountainview and Rockyview counties were also effected. Fortis Alberta says thousands of customers were left in the dark for over an hour but, power should be restored by supper-time.
There were also reports of a couple of roofs being blown off homes on the Siksika Reserve southeast of Calgary near Gleichen.
Enmax spokesperson Doris Kaufman-Woodcock tells 660News, as of 10:30 Tuesday night, most areas had their power restored with the remaining customers to follow shortly after.
She says the disruptions were all storm-related, a number of power poles had to be replaced as a result and Enmax had to bring in extra crews as well as a few arborists after toppled trees and broken branches knocked down power lines in many areas.
