It could be several weeks, maybe even a few months, before we know the full extent of damage from a thunder and hail storm that pounded parts of Calgary, Sunday night.

The storm moved through just after 10 p.m. dumping golf-ball sized hail from Royal Oak and Kincora in the northwest, down through Mission and Inglewood near downtown.

Steve Kee with the Insurance Bureau of Canada says most insurance policies do cover hail damage.

“Specifically if you have sort of an all perils coverage or comprehensive, hail is specifically named,” Kee tells 660News. “So it would be covered if the hail was as result of this storm.  What you need to do is document it and … talk to your insurance representative, get someone out to take a look at it.”

Of course, whether you make a claim or not might depend on what your deductible is.

“Sometimes it’s an unfortunate situation where you just feel, ‘Well I’ll just leave the dents because it’s not worth the deductible,’” says Kee. “In other cases you may want your car to come back the way it was before and it’s worth it.  It’s all up to you.”

Sunday night’s storm swept through a wide swatch of the city.  But it could be some time, if at all, before we know the full extent of the damage.

“We usually don’t get major claim reports for several weeks after a storm,” notes Kee, “and usually only at levels when the damage is over say $25 million.  So if we’re going to hear something about this storm, it’s going to take a couple of weeks for us to get some numbers.”

So far there have been a number of reports of vehicle owners suffering dents to cars, trucks and SUV’s, the result of the storm.
