An aviation artifact stored in a northeast Calgary warehouse has been moved to a new home about an hour south of the city.

About 25 volunteers in both Calgary and Nanton moved a de Havilland Mosquito from Calgary to the Bomber Command Museum in Nanton on Saturday.

It took about a year of planning for the move which included carefully wrapping parts of the aircraft, including wings, control panels and pilot seats, before loading the pieces onto long trailers.

Five years ago, a society was formed to keep the famous World War II artifact in the region after an overseas buyer expressed interest in the plane.

Now at its new home in Nanton, it’s expected to take up to five years to fully restore the aircraft, which ironically never saw combat but was used for photo-mapping in the 1950s.
