Calgarians will get their first look this week at the changing retail landscape in the country as two Zellers locations close their doors for good.
It’s the first move in a year-long transition of the outlets to Target stores, the popular U.S. retailer and rival of Walmart.
The company hopes to have as many as 135 locations open in Canada by the end of next year, including six in Calgary.
Target spokesperson Lisa Gibson told the Calgary Herald shoppers can expect the same Target experience they enjoy south of the border.
She added Calgarians can expect some type of special event in the months before the chain’s opening.
Back in February, Toronto residents got a sneak peek with a pop-up store that attracted 1,500 intrigued shoppers.
Walmart has begun remodelling its locations as well as hiring extra staff.
Analysts say in the end, consumers will be the beneficiaries with lower prices overall.
