Garrison Green was the centre of attention for Peacekeepers Day here in our city.

Hundreds of people gathered to pay tribute to Canadians killed in peace missions.

The names of the 275 fallen are now engraved on the wall of honour in Peacekeepers’ Park. Two more names have been added in the past year.

Guest of Honour for the event Major Bruce Henwood tells 660News along with remembering the fallen Canadians, the families need to be recognized.

“We are here looking at peace support operations because that’s what Canada does really well, but like I said behind every uniform, there’s a family and some of them pick up the pieces from the unimaginable, ” Henwood says.

Peacekeepers Day is held every year on the Sunday closest to August 9th.

That day in 1974, a Canadian Forces Buffalo aircraft was shot down in Syria while on a peace mission.

Nine people were killed.
