The Canadian Labour Congress says many students are coming out of post secondary studies with huge debt loads and can’t find a job.

Here in Calgary, University of Calgary Students Union President Hardave Birk tells 660News employment opportunities for grads are better in Alberta, but debt is still an issue.

“I think we’re definitely seeing students graduating with higher and higher debt loads as we move forward,” says Birk.

“You know, the government hasn’t done a lot here in Alberta to really address the issue of students graduating with high amounts of debt and if anything, more and more students are being pushed to take out student loans as we’ve seen cuts to scholarships, grants and bursaries.”

Birk adds many students try and curb their debt by picking up part time jobs.

However since 2009 only seven in 10 students wanting work have been able to find it.
