Canada’s labour market was hit hard last month, shedding 30,400 jobs, pushing up the national unemployment rate up by one-tenth of a point to 7.3 per cent.
Calgary faired better, our unemployment rate sits at 4.7 per cent and Alberta’s rate held steady at 4.6, the lowest in the country.
Canada’s young workers are among the hardest hit, 14 per cent of young men and women between the ages of 15 and 24 can’t find a job.
“Many young workers come out of school or training programs with high levels of debt and then cannot find jobs,” says Ken Georgetti, Canadian Labour Congress President. “If these levels of unemployment persist, we are going to sacrifice a whole generation of young people and that is a shame.”
The CLC is calling on the federal government to help our youth land jobs by providing training and apprenticeship opportunities.
