A new report from Ottawa says Canada is nearly halfway to meeting its 2020 greenhouse gas reduction target but Alberta’s emissions are on the rise.

While all other provinces are expected to see declines or only small increases in carbon dioxide, methane or ozone output Alberta’s output is expected to grow by 23 per cent.

Oilsands production is driving the increase but officials maintain it’s not fair to compare our emissions to other provinces as the third largest energy supplier in the world.

The provincial environment minister tells the Calgary Herald Alberta has been open about the fact that oilsands output will double to 3.3-million barrels per day by 2020.

But despite the increase in production, a new climate change plan for the province is already underway to improve oilsands energy efficiency.
