The Harper government is announcing progress on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Environment Minister Peter Kent says Canada is half-way towards meeting its 2020 target for cutting emissions from 2005 levels.
Pembina Institute Analyst P.J Partington is disappointed to see the Harper government take so much credit for decreasing emissions, when a lot of credit should go to the provinces.
The David Suzuki Foundation says many emission cuts can be attributed to provincial initiatives such as B.C.’s carbon tax incentive for clean energy.
Partington says in order for Canada to meet emission targets; the oilsands industry needs to be managed.
“Oilsands in particular are projected to grow very significantly. Dealing with that growth and making sure we have the innovations in place to grow to a responsible pace while keeping emissions down will be the make or break for Canada meeting its goal,” Partington says.
Partington says the Harper government is on the right track when it comes to regulating fuel efficiency for vehicles.
