It is quickly becoming a tradition during Ramadan here in Calgary, a holy month for the Muslim community.
It’s a clothing and food drive for both members of the Muslim community as well as non-members.
Held at the Marlborough Park Community Centre, there was a line-up for the 8am opening, Sunday, as about a hundred volunteers sorted through the available goods.
For Osman Taha, who moved here from Sudan five years ago, the day is a key one. The father of a family of five, Taha supports his family with a part-time cleaning job and uses the occasion to find quality school clothing for his children.
The event, which usually draws a minimum of a thousand people, also offers food donations. Recipients are qualified for the donations based on their income level.
Idrees Khan, chair of the Muslim Families Network, sums up the event telling the Calgary Herald: “This is the month of caring and generosity.”
