The Harper Tories are on the verge of introducing new legislation that would reshape the relationship between Ottawa and First Nations.
According to the Globe & Mail, the proposals in the legislation include the ability for aboriginals to own their own property on reserves. Each First Nations would have the option to opt into the property ownership program, but so far only a handful of the 600-hundred reserves in the country are indicating any interest.
Shawn Atleo, the recently re-elected National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, is strongly opposed to the concept. Among the fears being cited among natives is that transferable property rights could lead to non-natives buying land on reserves.
The Tory bill also proposes changes to matrimonial rights, also opposed by many chiefs; as well as education and financial transparency on First Nations.
