The Canadian Cancer Society says although more of us are using sunscreen to protect from sun damage, we’re still tanning too much.

With rates of skin cancer still on the rise, it appears the cultural transition to covering up is still happening too slowly.

Julia, with the Canadian Cancer Society, says we need to remember that even short amounts of sun exposure can be damaging.

“We know that skin cancer rates are on the rise, and skin cancer is still the most common cancer diagnosed in Canada,” Julia said.

“The key thing with that though, is that it’s mostly preventable, so that’s why we’re still out trying to change those norms around tanning, and let people know that no tan is a safe tan,” she added.

If you are going to be spending a lot of time in the sun, you are encouraged to wear suntan with at least an SPF rating of 15-30, wear a hat and try to find shade.
