Newly released documents indicate the Harper government has been warned about Canada’s dependence on fossil fuels and what’s being called a global mega-trend towards low-carbon energy sources.

The Calgary Herald reports the warning comes in briefing notes, prepared by bureaucrats at Natural Resources Canada, for Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver.

The documents, obtained by Post Media through Access to Information laws, say that in 2007 – 2008 clean energy was a $6.5 trillion global business and that Canada was last among G8 countries in terms of investment.

The briefing notes Canada currently has an enviable energy resource advantage, but future success can’t be taken for granted and Canada could be left behind in the burgeoning field of green energy development.
