Premier Alison Redford is vowing every single dime will be accounted for following a week-long trip to London, England; a pledge that comes in the aftermath of a spending scandal involving the former Chief Financial Officer with Alberta Health Services.
In an interview from London with the CBC, the Premier says she’s committed to transparency when it comes to spending by her government.
But critics, including the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and the opposition Wildrose, say the premier’s comments should extend to all members of government and current disclosure rules are too lax. Right now privacy protection rules forbid the disclosure of expenses for the province’s 87 MLA’s.
Wildrose leader Danielle Smith tells the Calgary Herald the entire system for disclosure needs to change.
Redford says she was shocked and disappointed with the news, that — while working for the one-time Capital Region Health Board in Edmonton between 2005 and 2008 — Allaudin Merali racked up over $346,000 in expenses for, among other things, swanky dinners and work on his Mercedes-Benz.
