In a two-day span, four people were made victims of vehicle theft by a man who claims to want to help them change a flat tire and Calgary police are turning to the public for help.

In total, five incidents happened during the day on July 30th and 31st.

Police say the man tells the vehicle owner to put pressure on the tire while he gets something from his vehicle, only to flee the scene with either the victim’s purse or wallet.

Four of the five incidents involved women of various ages. The fifth case involved a man who was not robbed.

Staff Sergeant Darrell Hess says these are believed to be targeted attacks, in which the suspect follows the victim into a shopping centre and could be responsible for their flat tire by slashing it.

It’s also believed the suspect alludes to a legitimate company, making the victim feel safe in the situation.

“The man is described as 30 to 40-years-old with a medium or tanned skin tone, possibly of Hispanic or East Indian descent, 5’6 tall, black hair, brown eyes. In three of the four reported cases, he was described wearing an orange reflective safety vest.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
