Alberta Health Services is launching a review into procedures after another senior and dementia patient was able to wander away from Rockyview General Hospital.

It’s the third patient in two weeks.

The 69-year-old man left the grounds just before noon Wednesday and was found a short time later at Chinook Centre.

On July 20th, the body of a 68-year-old man missing from the hospital was later pulled from the Glenmore Reservoir.

And then Tuesday, a 71-year-old wandered from the facility and was found downtown by family members.

It’s not the only review that’s going on involving a dementia patient.

This latest wandering senior comes as officials probe the case of Wendy Miller.

The 64-year-old choked to death on her food.

Staff then reportedly told her husband that her emergency call button wasn’t working at the time of the incident.

Calgary Zone Director Dr. François Belanger says there is nothing wrong with Rockyview.

He tells the Calgary Herald, the hospital has a higher population of patients with dementia and staff are trying their best.

Belanger wants the review to focus on what’s the best physical environment for these patients, the right units and optimal monitoring.

Friends of Medicare Executive Director Sandra Azocar tells 660News it should also look into accountability.

“It’s so unfortunate that this is allowed to happen when you’re talking about a country that has higher expectation levels of care for seniors,” says Azocar. “I’m not surprised!”

“Staffing levels (in Alberta) are simply not appropriate, especially when you’re talking about dementia patients who require a higher level of care,” she adds.

Dementia patients in Calgary have created a backlog in the system and many hospitals are struggling to keep up.

Elderly and frail patients are facing wait times of months for available long-term care beds.

Alberta Health Services is hoping to reduce the strain by 50 per cent by October.

The problem could get worse before it gets better.

Little Bow Continuing Care Centre, a dementia and aging patient facility has been ordered to be closed because its’ facility isn’t up to building standards.

Patients have been told they’ll have to find homes elsewhere.
