A former student union president at Mount Royal University pleaded guilty in court Wednesday to robbing the southeast Servus Credit Union in February.

28 year-old Megan Melnyk entered guilty pleas on robbery, fraud and breach of probation charges.

Free on bail, pending sentencing, she issued a public apology just minutes after her appearance.

Appearing in court in a short black dress and bright red spike heels, Melnyk sat quietly and confidently as her lawyer entered guilty pleas on her behalf.

She was anything but quiet when she emerged from the courthouse, telling reporters she’s ashamed and feels horrible for what her family and her former university have been through.

Still, she’s at a loss to explain why she robbed a bank with a disguise and a weapon.

“It felt like it was a different person.  I mean, I know it’s me but it didn’t feel like me,” says Melnyk.

She did admit to having a gambling problem and had no comment on allegations of financial anomalies during her tenure at Mount Royal.

A sentencing date will be set Friday.
