Two people have been killed in a rock climbing accident near Canmore.

A man and a woman in their early 20s fell from the popular Heart Creek Trail near Lac Des Arcs just before 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux said the two fell approximately 100 metres.

“They were climbing as a pair and were otherwise appropriately equipped,” he said. “It’s unclear at this time if they were with a larger group or not, but they were definitely climbing as a pair in this instance.”

Brideaux said it’s not clear what caused the fall at the popular rock climbing spot or how experienced the climbers were.

An official with Stars Air Ambulance said they were called to the scene but did not transport any patients.
