Police say speed was definitely a factor in a deadly crash early Saturday morning in the northeast.

A 1991 Cavalier crashed between its headlights into a light pole at the intersection of 36th Street and Whitefield Drive and the lone 25-year-old driver was pronounced dead on scene.

Cst. Darrell Chapman said according to witnesses, the driver was going around 30 kms over the posted 60 km/hr limit.

“Definitely just by looking at the collision scene, you can tell there was very high speed, the front end almost wrapped completely around the light pole,” he said.

Debris was left scattered all over the road, even sending traffic lights crashing to the ground.

Chapman said the crash was so severe it took crews almost two hours to remove the body from the vehicle.

“That is rather lengthy and it just goes to show the amount of intrusion that basically encased the body into the vehicle,” he said.

Traffic was closed in the area for almost six hours.

It’s still not clear if alcohol was a factor.
