The most commonly used word in the English language has remained the same since the 1520′s.

Over 5.2-million books from five centuries were analyzed and the word “the” continues to be the most often used, while phrases and terminology has changed dramatically becoming less religious and more American.

According to the Slovenian study, top four-word phrases in 1575 included “the word of God” and “baptized in his name.”

By contrast, in 2008, popular phrases were “at the same time” and “at the end of,” which signals a shift in how publishing has evolved.
