Fresh off its big centennial celebrations, the planning continues for the redevelopment of Stampede Park.
During the recent 10-day event, $1.4-million people attended the 100th anniversary edition of The Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth. Interestingly, outside of the summertime exhibition, $2.58-million people made their way to the grounds this past year.
According to the Calgary Herald, over the next three years another $100 million will be spent in redeveloping the park as well as the old Victoria Park location. It’s all part of a $900-million master plan.
In the next three years, the $43 million Agrium Western Event Centre will be built. The largest agricultural arena of its kind in the country, which will include 2500 spectator seats, should be ready by the spring of 2014.
Now that infrastructure work is done along the riverfront, construction of a new seven hectare park will begin. It should be ready by 2015.
A stampede spokesperson sees the area becoming a year long destination for both Calgarians and visitors, where people can enjoy supper and bask in the Stampede’s tradition of agriculture, the annual exhibition and education.
