Record high energy consumptions across the province on Monday due to the hot weather led to rolling blackouts and with more hot weather on the way, Albertans are being asked to conserve energy.

Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) ordered the blackouts at 2 p.m. saying the hot temperatures caused a strain on the power supply.

ENMAX says a combination between the heat and four power stations being down is being blamed for the outages.

As a result, ENMAX issued rolling power outages in Calgary that lasted about 30 minutes each.

The rolling blackouts hit many quadrants of the city, and impacted traffic because lights were out at some key intersections.

The blackouts did not impact Stampede or critical city infrastructure.

Albertans can conserve power use by turning off unnecessary lights and using air conditioning as little as possible.

According to Environment Canada, Calgarians can expect a high of 31 on Tuesday.
