Four bears in Fernie have been shot in the past two weeks for rummaging through garbage cans in the B.C. community.

The latest incident happened on Canada Day when conservation officers shot and killed a bear which had been moved from Alberta after getting into bird feeders.

A spokesperson from the Fernie Bear Aware group says relocating bears often disorients and confuses them, doing more harm than good.

The four killings are a reminder to keep garbage indoors except on pick-up days to avoid attracting wildlife.
