The chief economist at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce says our city is very lucky to have a world renowned fair like the Stampede.

“Absolutely,” says Ben Brunnen. “The Calgary Stampede is one of those festivals that’s one of the largest grossing in Canada.  And it gives Calgary a huge profile every year … so without a doubt Calgary’s fortunate to have the Stampede.”

He notes traditionally the Stampede generates an economic benefit to the city of between $350 million and $400 million.

“This year is going to be particularly better for the Calgary Stampede,” addes Brunen, “largely because it’s the centennial and it’s the cultural capital of Canada year for Calgary.  And so we’re expecting bigger than previous year’s numbers.”

Visitors to Calgary for Stampede will also be exposed to the city’s new slogan:  “Be part of the Energy.”

“Calgary definitely has a brand,” says Brunnen, pointing to Calgary’s identity. “We’re branded with the Stampede and we’re branded with being Canada’s energy hub.  So making sure that the world recognizes Calgary for what it can offer the world is going to be critical to make sure we get the best possible profile out of major events like the Stampede.”
