Pancake breakfast history at Stampede

How did pancake breakfasts become a fixture of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth? Stampede Archivist Aimee Benoit says it’s all thanks to a chuckwagon driver who began the flap jack craze in 1923.
“A rancher from Gleason … his name was Jack Morton, also known as ‘Wildhorse Jack’, and he brought his outfit downtown and set up the cook stove and the camp cook started cooking breakfast and feeding it to the crowd,” says Benoit.
She says a 1923 newspaper articles shows a handful of people gathered around the chuck wagon, eagerly waiting their pancake.
It was also the inaugural year of chuck races at the Calgary Stampede.
