The Walrus has a leading 34 National Magazine Awards nominations

TORONTO – The Walrus has a leading 34 nominations heading into this year’s National Magazine Awards, which are celebrating their 35th anniversary.

A team of 228 judges considered nearly 2,000 submissions across 45 categories before narrowing down the pack to 362 contenders from 81 publications.

The three finalists for print magazine of the year are Maisonneuve, Outdoor Canada and Sportsnet, while The Grid, Today’s Parent and Toronto Life are competing for best digital magazine.

Other leading nominees include Report on Business with 30 nominations, Toronto Life with 24, L’actualité with 22 and explore with 19.

Dominique Forget of L’actualité is nominated for five articles in five different categories, while a Report on Business story by John Gray and Stephanie Nolen is nominated in five different categories.

A special award for outstanding achievement will go to Heather Robertson, recognizing her over 40 years as a freelancer, her work founding the Writers’ Union of Canada and the Professional Writers Association of Canada, and her part in the legal fight to protect electronic rights for freelancers.

The awards will be handed out on June 7 in Toronto.
