A young woman working in Alison Redford’s Calgary campaign office resigned on Saturday over what the premier calls an “entirely inappropriate” tweet about Wildrose leader Danielle Smith.

The tweet posted Friday by Amanda Wilkie read:

“If @ElectDanielle likes young and growing families so much, why doesn’t she have children of her own?  #wrp family pack = insincere”

Late Saturday morning, the Wildrose leader responded in a release:

“When David and I married in 2006, we intended to have children together. After a few years we sought help from the Calgary regional fertility clinic. I appreciated the support and assistance of the caring staff, as we went through tests and treatments but, in the end we were not successful.”

Smith continued by saying how fortunate she is to have a stepson and five nieces and nephews.

The tweet has since vanished from the social media site.

In a release, Premier Alison Redford condemned the comment:

“Last night, a tweet was sent that was entirely inappropriate. It was hurtful and does not reflect my values nor those of my campaign in any way,” said Redford. “Once I became aware of the tweet, I called Danielle Smith immediately.”

Smith has said she and the premier have spoken and it’s a closed matter.
