Calgary might have some of the highest parking rates in the country, but that’s not stopping people from trying to find a spot in the warmth of an indoor garage.
The Calgary Parking Authority had to tell some drivers to find somewhere else to park Wednesday morning, holding back stalls for those who pay monthly fees.
“We were just having people coming in earlier and wanting to be inside for the whole day,” CPA General Manager Troy McLeod tells 660News. “We also have contract holders, so we’re holding those spaces for when they arrive as well, because they pay for that space for every day of the month.”
McLeod admits the mixture of commuters who pay the montly fee and those who pay on a daily basis occassionally leads to confusion.
“We even had a challenge the other day,” he adds. “One of our gate arms was frozen and so — even though the sign said ‘full’ — we still had daily parkers coming in. So we did overfill on that lot for sure.”
McLeod says when the weather turns cold, more people decide that they are going to drive to work and that puts pressure on indoor parking space. He says drivers can track real time parking availability on the parking authority’s website.
