NHL training camps open in less than a month, and even before scrimmages begin, there is no shortage of optimism within the Calgary Flames organization.

Flames General Manager Jay Feaster tells The Calgary Herald he likes the team’s core players: Captain Jarome Iginla, defenceman Jay Bouwmeester and goalie Mikka Kiprusoff.

Feaster didn’t sign any of the big names on the free agency market, but did pull the trigger on one deal that sent veteran blueliner Robyn Regehr to Buffalo for a couple of players in what most hockey observers viewed as a salary dump.

The Flames did lock up a couple of key players during the off-season, namely forwards Curtis Glencross and Alex Tanguay.

Last week the club also announced it signed veteran defenceman Scott Hannan.

Flames Head Coach Brent Sutter tells 660News, he is also excited about the upcoming campaign, especially seeing how well the team was playing before the curtain came down on the 2010-11 season.

Sutter says the Flames also have some great talent in the system and those players will be brought up when they are ready to compete, adding the organization is committed to winning.
