More than 120 went to hospital after riot; staff appalled

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Even doctors and nurses are frustrated and embarrassed by what they had to deal with in the ER last night during and after the riot in Downtown Vancouver.

More than 120 people were sent to hospital after they were involved in drunken fights and more serious situations, says Clay Adams with Vancouver Coastal Health.

“Pepper spray injuries… we also were seeing a large number of lacerations, we have a handful still in,” he explains. “One individual remains in a neuro-ward in critical condition. Two individuals related to stabbings.”

“A lot of the staff — while dealing professionally — were extremely annoyed, disappointed, embarrassed at the kind of people they were seeing,” he adds.

Adams says many emergency staffers came in on their own time after what they saw on TV. “These were all the results of injury situations that were needless. They need not occurred.”
