B.C. residents in central Interior warned to get ready to evacuate

HOUSTON, B.C. – The entire B.C. central interior District of Houston was placed on evacuation alert Saturday as rising waters on Buck Creek threatened to burst a dike.

All residents and businesses in the town of Houston were told they must be ready to leave on a moment’s notice, said Lindsay Carnes, the information officer with the emergency operations centre in Houston.

She said the alert was issued as the rain-swollen creek reached within half a metre of the top of the dike.

Residents were asked to get ready to leave with their essential items such as medications, valuable papers, and to look after their pets’ care if necessary, Carnes said.

A total 445 residences were on evacuation alert and six on evacuation order involving as many as one-thousand people, she said.

A high streamflow advisory was issued for other rivers in the same area east and west of Quesnel, Williams Lake and 100 Mile House.
