Canadian soldier dies

A Canadian soldier, Bombardier Karl Manning, 31, has died in a non-hostile incident in Afghanistan.

His body was discovered by fellow soldiers at a remote outpost in the Zangabad area of Panjwaii district on Friday.

Manning, a native of Chicoutimi, Que., was a radar operator and his death was announced early Saturday by Brig.-Gen. Dean Milner, the commander of Canadian troops in Afghanistan.

Milner says an investigation has determined that Manning’s death was not the result of enemy action and no foul play is suspected.

Manning was near the end of an almost seven month deployment with the 1st Battalion Royal 22e Regiment battle group.

The death is the second of the year, and the first for the Canadian mission in Afghanistan since March 27.
