Cannon says almost all Canadians evacuated from Libya

Foreign Affairs in Ottawa has confirmed most Canadians at the airport in Tripoli have been rescued from the chaos engulfing Libya.

The military has been called in to get the rest out.

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon says most of the 200 Canadians in Libya have fled or will soon do so.

Cannon confirmed that about 70 Canadians managed to get to London, England while about 40 flew into Madrid and another 20 went to Malta on board flights chartered by Spain, Britain and the United States.

The Canadian government is sending a C-17 military cargo jet from Germany to Rome where it will wait for clearance to fly into Tripoli.

Governor General David Johnson, who is scheduled to fly to Kuwait Friday, has agreed to keep his aircraft on standby for a possible evacuation flight is needed.

Italy is also offering to allow Canadians trapped in Benghazi aboard its navy ships once they are authorized to approach Libyan shores.
