Varaschin’s mother appeals for help in solving daughter’s murder

ORANGEVILLE, Ont. – The mother of murdered Orangeville, Ont., nurse Sonia Varaschin made a heartfelt plea for information to catch her daughter’s killer.

Michele Varaschin spoke at a news conference, Thursday, as police updated the investigation into the unsolved murder.

Michele stood next to Sonia’s brother and made a plea for help.

“To those who may have information, but haven’t come forward, we can only ask why. We urge you to think of how you would feel if this was your friend, your co-worker, your acquaintance, or member of your family,” Michele said.

The body of 42-year-old Sonia was found in Caledon in early September, a week after she disappeared from her Orangeville home.

Her mother also said there will be an empty place setting this Christmas for dinner, in memory of Sonia and how her life was taken so early.

Experts from the FBI have helped investigators update their profile of Sonia’s killer, but it is still quite vague: he knows the Orangeville and Caledon areas, was likely using alcohol and drugs and may have acted unusual (irritable, agitated or anxious) on the days before or after her death. Also, he may have missed some appointments and was likely driving around in her car with blood dripping on the outside.

Experts said that the suspect may have moved from the area or limited his social activities in order to avoid being caught.

Investigators said they are confident that the case will be solved, and hope that the above description will be familiar to someone. They are asking anyone who recognizes these traits to contact the Orangeville Police Service Tip Line at (519) 941-2522, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 immediately.

They are also asking anyone who has information about a male owning or having been seen wearing Dakota or Wind River brand boots in size 10 or 11 to call them as soon as possible. A photo of the boot can be seen by clicking here.

The team has responded to 460 tips that have been called in from the public and have interviewed 500 people.
