2011 budget passed

Calgary’s council has finalized and passed the budget for next year.

After spending days nibbling away at the bottom line, the tax hike for 2011 is now going to be around 5 per cent. On average each household will pay about $60 more per year.

The budget passed by a vote 14-1 with Peter Demong the lone Alderman to say no.

The original proposed tax hike was 6.75 per cent, but council was able to shrink that number by cutting a gym for City Hall, decreasing the police budget and taking money away from other departments.

There could be more cuts to come.

The Police Commission will review its budget on Friday, and try to find another two million dollars in savings.

City administration has been asked to try and cut another eight million dollars.
