Snack food recall

We could soon see one of the biggest snack food recalls in North American history after investigators found salmonella in a popular flavour enhancer.

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein or ‘HVP’ is used in thousands of processed food products but it’s the ones you don’t have to cook in order to eat that officials are most concerned with.

56 products are being recalled in the U.S.    Details at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/HVPCP/

So far, two products have been recalled in Canada.

Health Canada is recalling one flavour of chips and two flavours of dip from the U.S. due to possible salmonella contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency urged people not to eat T. Marzetti brand Veggie Dips or Hawaiian Kettle Style potato chips.

The affected dip flavours are Spinach Veggie and Southwest Ranch Veggie.

Both are sold all over Canada

The affected chip flavour is Sweet Maui Onion.    The snacks are sold in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

So far, there are no reported illnesses linked to the contamination.
