Father of alleged hostage-taker speaks out

The father of the young man charged following a hostage taking incident Thursday at A.E. Cross Junior High says he’s grateful police resolved the incident without resorting to deadly force.

Gabriel Adeniran says he knew there was something wrong with his 25-year-old son Matthew who is facing numerous charges including forcible confinement, assault with a weapon and uttering threats.

His father says every night Matthew was talking to himself and mumbling.   Adeniran says he thinks his son needs help.

The secretary was held by knifepoint during the two-hour incident.

According to the Calgary Herald, it appears the former school student had a beef with Principal Duane Shartau.

Matthew Adeniran allegedly told police that he was angry with the principal over a head injury he suffered in a basketball game 10 years ago.

His father says his son recovered from the injury and hasn’t brought it up since.
