Shoppers hunt for Boxing Day bargains

Shopping malls across Calgary have been packed with people throughout the holidays, but saw an especially chaotic day on Saturday.

Shoppers desperate for Boxing Day bargains battled crowded parking lots and congested shopping centres.

However, one consumers group says the sales aren’t as good as in years past.

The Canadian Consumers Association tells 660News bargain shoppers can’t expect the same type of selection they saw previous years, because most retailers entered the holiday season with lower inventory due to the slumping economy.

Despite this, Chinook Centre still expects up to 70,000 people there by the end of the day.

Shoppers are also flocking to CrossIron Mills in Balzac.

Officials are expecting 50,000 shoppers will pack the mall, on the first boxing day for it to be open.

CrossIron Mills GM James Moller tells 660News this will be the busiest shopping day of the year for them.

CrossIron Mills sold about $1-million dollars in gift cards in December, with many of them expected to be redeemed on Boxing Day.
